Microneedling aftercare

Microneedling is a professional skin treatment designed to stimulate the skin's natural repair processes and support collagen production. But achieving your desired results doesn't stop when your appointment ends. What you do in the days following treatment plays an important role in supporting your skin as it heals.

After microneedling, your skin needs time, hydration, and a gentle approach. Rather than introducing more products or trying to speed up the process, the goal is to protect your skin barrier and give your skin the care it needs to recover.

we believe thoughtful aftercare is an essential part of every treatment. Here's what to prioritize after microneedling.

1. Prioritize Hydration

Following microneedling, your skin may feel tight, dry, warm, or sensitive. Supporting hydration can help keep your skin comfortable while its protective barrier recovers.

Choose gentle, hydrating products recommended by your provider, and follow their instructions for when to resume your regular skincare routine.

Hyaluronic acid is a popular hydrating ingredient that helps attract and retain water in the skin. However, not every formulation is appropriate immediately after a procedure, so use only products your provider has approved for post-treatment application.

The takeaway: Focus on replenishing hydration rather than introducing new active ingredients.

2. Keep Your Skincare Routine Simple

Immediately after microneedling, more skincare isn't necessarily better. Your skin has undergone a controlled treatment that requires time to heal.

Until your provider advises that your skin is ready, avoid potentially irritating products such as:

  • Retinoids and retinol

  • Exfoliating acids, including AHAs and BHAs

  • Facial scrubs and abrasive cleansing tools

  • Strong or unfamiliar active ingredients

  • Products that cause stinging or irritation

Instead, follow a gentle routine tailored to your treatment. Use a mild cleanser and appropriate moisturizer when permitted by your provider, and avoid unnecessary friction.

Your provider will guide you on when it's safe to gradually reintroduce your usual products.

3. Support Your Skin's Natural Healing Process

Aftercare products should be selected carefully, particularly immediately after microneedling, when the skin's protective barrier may be temporarily disrupted.

Your provider may recommend specific professional aftercare products to support hydration and comfort. Hyaluronic acid-based products, for example, may be appropriate when formulated and approved for post-procedure use.

Some clinics also incorporate treatments featuring exosomes or soothing masks into their protocols. However, these products are not interchangeable, and evidence for the benefits of certain add-on treatments varies. Their safety and suitability depend on the specific product, its formulation, and how it is used.

Always use products specifically approved by your treating professional for your procedure. Avoid applying unapproved products to freshly treated skin.

4. Make Sun Protection a Priority

Protecting your skin from the sun is an important part of recovery.

After microneedling, skin may be more sensitive, and UV exposure can contribute to irritation and unwanted pigmentation. Avoid direct sun exposure while your skin heals, and follow your provider's instructions regarding when to resume sunscreen.

Once your provider confirms that sunscreen is appropriate, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply as directed. Protective clothing, shade, and limiting direct sun exposure can provide additional protection.

Daily sun protection remains an essential long-term habit, especially when working toward more even-looking skin.

5. Give Your Skin Time to Heal

It can be tempting to check your skin constantly or try to speed up visible results, but recovery takes patience.

During the healing period:

  • Avoid picking, peeling, or scratching your skin.

  • Don't over-cleanse or aggressively rub the treated area.

  • Avoid exfoliation and irritating products until cleared by your provider.

  • Follow guidance on exercise, swimming, saunas, and other activities that may increase irritation or infection risk.

  • Contact your provider if you experience worsening pain, increasing redness, spreading warmth, pus, fever, or other concerning symptoms.

Temporary redness and sensitivity can occur after treatment, but recovery varies depending on treatment intensity and individual skin response. Your provider can help you understand what is expected and when to seek further care.

Your Treatment Is Only Part of the Journey

Microneedling works by initiating a controlled healing response. The skin then needs time to recover and remodel collagen, so improvements in texture and the appearance of certain acne scars develop gradually.

Following appropriate aftercare helps protect your skin during this process and reduces the risk of avoidable irritation.

we believe great skincare is about more than the treatment itself. It's about a thoughtful approach before, during, and after every appointment.

Hydrate. Protect. Keep it gentle. Give your skin time.
